Katherine Harris Sighting...

This is just too funny...

From USNews.com...

She may have given up her House seat to run a losing campaign for the Senate, but that doesn't mean former Florida Rep. Katherine Harris actually has to leave the House.

See, as a former representative, she keeps floor rights and she used them to the hilt Tuesday night before President Bush's State of the Union address. Our chief photodog, Charlie Archambault, caught her mingling on the Republican side and even handing out business cards.

GOP insiders say she still has a place in Washington and is penning a book. Recall that she lost her bid to unseat Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in what was widely perceived as a bumbling campaign. But don't count her out: We've met her a couple of times, and she always seems on her game and mulling her future ventures.

Drudge Fires a Shot at Dems... and misses...

Matt Drudge must have been estatic when he posted this...

"DEM VOW ALREADY BROKEN: HOUSE SETS 4-DAY WORK WEEK
Sun Jan 07 2007 15:03:38 ET

Democrats ran to expand the work week in the House to 5 days.

But guess how long that lasted?

Not even one week!

"Culture Shock on Capitol Hill: House to Work 5 Days a Week" front-paged the WASHINGTON POST in December.

Majority leader Steny Hoyer said members of the House will be expected in the Capitol for votes each week by 6:30 p.m. Monday and will finish their business about 2 p.m. Friday.

Explained the POST: "Forget the minimum wage. Or outsourcing jobs overseas. The labor issue most on the minds of members of Congress yesterday was their own: They will have to work five days a week starting in January."

But on the morning after the night before, on the first full week of the new congress, Hoyer has pulled back from his vow!

A Hoyer press release obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT boldly declares: "Monday, January 8, 2007: The House is not in session."

Hill sources claim The House is taking Monday 'off' this week, because of the championship football game between Ohio State and the University of Florida.

And, of course, the following Monday is the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

100 hours...starting...soon

Developing...
"

However, Crooks and Liars was quick put that rumor to rest...

"Sounds pretty bad, doesn't it? Problem is, Drudge is weaseling in telling the story. It's the truth, but without any context.

Guess where I found the context? FoxNews (I know, go figure)

It's only the first week of the 110th Congress, but Democrats have already called a time-out so lawmakers can enjoy a very important event - the BCS championship football game between University of Florida and the Ohio State University.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer on Friday handed out this week's schedule. It noted that House legislative actions would not begin on Monday, but would be postponed until Tuesday.

Here's the best part: Steny Hoyer took particular care to name a colleague who he was sure would really appreciate the day off to watch the game…his friend from Ohio. Republican and House Minority Leader John Boehner

"…In the spirit of comity, and I know if Maryland were playing, I would want to be accommodated and I want to accommodate my friend, Mr. Boehner," Hoyer said in reference to new House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Now granted, the following week has Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, making a second four day week, but that's hardly dropping down the 109th's 2 1/2 day work week, is it?"

I saw Michael J. Fox give a speech!

This is my grandmother, myself, and Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton.

The Michael J. Fox campaign for WI Gov. Jim Doyle was amazing. He gave a great speech on the importance of supporting Stem Cell research and why it was important to Vote for Doyle. He was probably one of the major reasons that Doyle won in such a landslide.

I have pictures from the event, which are posted here. You can see all the pictures from the event (including some of WI State Sen. Jim Sullivan, Kathleen Falk, plus more of Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton, U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, Gov. Jim Doyle, and Mr. Michael J. Fox) on my facebook account.

The local news media also covered this event...

From JS Online...
Fox touts Doyle on stem cells
Green ad aims to link casino deals, donations

With the election two weeks away, Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle returned to the stem cell issue Tuesday, unveiling a TV ad with actor Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson's disease.

The ad suggests that the Doyle campaign sees the stem cell issue as a powerful way to woo undecided voters. Stem cell research is seen as holding the promise to cure or lead to treatments for a host of debilitating diseases.

Meanwhile, Republican challenger Mark Green launched a new ad that slams Doyle for contributions from casino interests, picking up an issue he raised Friday in the final debate before the Nov. 7 election.

As Green did Friday, the ad alleges Doyle changed his position on casino expansion because of money spent by American Indian tribes and casino interests in the 2002 election and since then. An accompanying news release listed $1.9 million in spending.

Both sides said the other is lying and desperate.

"They have made up every wild accusation they can," Doyle said. "It seems to me their ads are getting more desperate."

In a statement, Green said: "In his desperate attempt to hold on to power, Jim Doyle continues to run the most dishonest campaign Wisconsin has ever seen."

A look at the developments:

Doyle stem cell ad: The 30-second ad featuring Fox will begin running today in Milwaukee, Green Bay and Wausau. It features Fox talking directly to the camera, the shifts and shakes in his body underscoring the impact of the disease.

The ad is similar to ones Fox has cut for Democrats in Missouri and Maryland. The effort drew national attention when radio host Rush Limbaugh questioned whether Fox had stopped taking his medication or exaggerated the effects of the disease by acting - a notion dismissed by others.

"I think the statement (by Limbaugh) was sad," said John Rogers, Fox's political adviser.

He declined to respond directly to Limbaugh's charge.

"I'm not going to get into Michael's meds," said Rogers, who also serves as chairman of Stem Cell Champions for Doyle.

An excerpt from Fox's autobiography that appears on the Web site of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, says this about a 1999 appearance before Congress: "I had made a deliberate choice to appear before the subcommittee without medication. It seemed to me that this occasion demanded that my testimony about the effects of the disease, and the urgency we as a community were feeling, be seen as well as heard. For people who had never observed me in this kind of shape, the transformation must have been startling."

The star of the "Back to the Future" movies and TV shows such as "Spin City," Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991. He toured stem cell laboratories at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with Doyle in February 2005. About a month ago, he helped Doyle with fund raising in New York, Rogers said.

In the ad, Fox says Doyle "knows the promise (the research) holds and the jobs it can create," while saying Green "has stood in the way of embryonic stem cell research."

He closes by saying that what voters decide here "can affect millions of people - like me, like your family. Please re-elect Governor Doyle. For all of us."

Green has said he is a strong supporter of stem cell research, including votes to fund research going on at UW-Madison. As a member of the U.S. House, he voted against a measure, however, that would have expanded the number of embryonic stem cell lines for which researchers could obtain federal grants.

His chief objection, Green says, is federal funding for research that destroys embryos. During the campaign, he proposed spending $25 million over four years for research into techniques that would allow the stem cells to be obtained without destroying the embryo.

Green said the ad "flat out lies about my record" and called it "part of a national smear campaign by Democrats."

Green casino ad: Among other accusations, the ad says Doyle changed his position on casino expansion because of money from American Indian tribes and other casino interests.

The $1.9 million cited by Green is from a compilation of past press reports and other filings. In many cases, the money went to outside groups that advanced Doyle's cause or was spent by the tribes as issue ads.

After Friday's debate, Doyle said tribes "can't make contributions to me and they didn't make contributions to me." He reiterated that Tuesday.

In the 2002 campaign, Doyle expressed an openness toward long-term compacts with the tribes for current casinos. One of the first things he did after taking office was negotiate new compacts that expanded the types of casino games that could be played but required tribes to pay much more to the state.

Doyle also changed his mind on whether the Legislature should be able to veto those agreements, and vetoed a legislative oversight bill.

The Green tally includes money spent by the Troha family, which is involved in a proposed Kenosha casino that would be run by the Menominee Tribe.

Kenosha casino developer Dennis Troha contributed $50,000 to the Democratic Governors Association during the most recent reporting period with the Internal Revenue Service. That's on top of $50,000 he gave to the group in December 2005.

Troha and his family have contributed more than $192,000 to Doyle's campaign since 2002, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

...

Today's TMJ4 covered the story as well...
Fox said, "'I'm coming to Wisconsin because it's the birthplace of embryonic stem cell research, where pioneering scientists may one day unlock the cures for humanity's oldest and deadliest diseases. For millions of Americans like me, who hope that stem cell research might one day bring cures, the choice between Governor Doyle and Congressman Green couldn't be more clear or more important.'"

LINK: Fox In Milwaukee

And...
Actor Michael J. Fox was campaigning for Doyle in Milwaukee Monday. Fox has Parkinson's disease and believes stem cell research could lead to a cure.

Fox is supporting Doyle and other candidates across the country who support embryonic stem cell research. "America is about hope, it's about promise, it's about always moving forward and we deserve leaders who will deliver that hope to their constituents," Fox said at a rally in Milwaukee.

"What is at stake is Wisconsin's future as the absolute center of medical research that may one day find the cures for diseases that we long thought to be incurable," said Doyle.

Challenger Mark Green wants limited use of stem cells and accused Doyle of wooing the "Hollywood vote." "He's (Doyle) looking to Hollywood. I'm looking to Appleton, Neenah, Oshkosh, West Bend, Port Washington, Green Bay, Hudson, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, all over the place," Green said.

Dornan Smears Pelosi

Think Progress...

Former Rep. Bob Dornan (R-CA) launched a vicious attack on Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), claiming that “loyal catholics” and others who “believe in Christianity” should make sure she stays out of power. The failure to do so would mean jumping “into the hell fire of a Nancy Pelosi Catholic who votes for abortion and rights for perverts.”

Weekly Column #1: '06 Elections Will Be Interesting

Check my column on Newsvine! Political Thunder on Newsvine

All across the country, candidates for Congress, Governorships, and other local positions are starting to put their campaigns into gear. Close races that are vital to each party are heating up almost everywhere. I can hardly make sense of it all. However, there are two that I have been following intently.

The first of which is the Lieberman vs. Lamont Democratic Primary in Connecticut. Ned Lamont is gaining very quickly in the polls, in fact, according to a recent Quinnipiac poll, he has taken the lead (54 - 41) over Lieberman. It's hard to believe that a 3-term, former vice-presidental candidate, former "Shoo-in" Senator is going to be beaten. Why would Lieberman lose, why is he even being challenged? “I think my opponent has tried and appears to be succeeding in making this a referendum on George Bush and the Iraq war," Lieberman said. And he's right. The answer to my question is simple. This is happening because it needs to. For too long Lieberman had held a post he doesn't deserve. He has supported George W. Bush and the Republicans since he was defeated in his vice-presidental bid (in 2003, he voted with the GOP 30% of the time). And he is an outspoken proponent of the Iraq War. These positions are very unpopular with his base. According to the same Quinnipiac poll, of the Lamont supporters, 65 percent say their vote is mainly against Lieberman.

Ouch.

Lieberman has tried to swing voters by having big name Democrats campaign for him. However, it is having little effect, and not many Democrats are helping him out. Bill and Hillary Clinton have each said they support him in the Primary, but they will support the Democrat in the general election. According to "The Hill" (a newspaper for and about the U.S. Congress), Minority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.), Minority Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.), Charles Schumer, Ron Wyden (Ore.) and Lieberman’s home-state colleague, Chris Dodd have all said they will support Lieberman in the primary, but have not answered who they will support if he loses. Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, New Jersey Senators Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez, Tom Harkin (Iowa), and Senator Barack Obama (Ill.) all have said they will support the Democrat in the general election, but will not comment on the primary. A grand total of three senators have said they will support Lieberman no matter what, even if he loses the primary and runs as an independent.

Lieberman is being pushed out by unhappy Democrats who are tired of having him vote with Bush, support Bush, and get kissed by Bush on national TV. Lieberman will most likely lose the primary and then run as an independent. Lamont should have no problem in the general election, unless Holy Joe takes votes away from him. And if Lieberman succeeds in bringing Lamont down with him, and allowing Republican candidate Alan Schlesinger to win, then there is proof that Lieberman needs to go. If Lieberman loses, he has a responsibility to step aside so that the Democratic Party can be victorious in the race. Unfortunately, it appears that Lieberman is only interested remaining in power and will stop at nothing to keep it.

Speaking of "nothing", let's look at the disaster that is the Katherine Harris Senate race. This is a dream come true for those Democrats who watched her help Bush to steal the 2000 Presidential Election. Her campaign couldn't be any worse. According to another Quinnipiac poll, she's trailing Bill Nelson by 59 percent to 26 percent and "only 35 percent of Republicans polled said they wanted her as the nominee."

Harris' campaign has been self-defeating from the start. Her initial campaign was lackluster and her very name will excite the Democratic base to get out and vote... against her. Her initial 2.5 million dollar campaign fund was nothing compared to Bill Nelson's $10 million. However, on Hannity and Colmes she announced her secret weapon, a multi-million dollar inheritance from her father who passed away a mere two months before. She continued to say, "I'm going to put everything on the line. Everything. Not just my future, and my reputation, my father's name, I'm going to take his legacy, that he gave to me, everything that I have, and I'm going to put it in this race." She then also stated that, "I'm going to win", after pausing for dramatic effect.

Wow, strong words for a near-dead campaign. However, there is more to be said about her "everything". Because one week earlier, according to the Orlando Sentinel, "Campaign spokeswoman Morgan Dobbs said that ... Harris will sell her existing assets rather than rely on money from her father, a bank executive who died in January".

Aside from this disturbing backpedaling, her campaign only seems to get worse. Campaign managers have been resigning left and right, all of them noting her odd behavior. One of them said, "It smacks of real paranoia." The state GOP does not want her as the nominee, and even Jeb Bush will not back her. Gov. Bush said this about her, "I am the party leader. I've got concerns. The campaign can't be about her. It has to be about Bill Nelson and the future of our state and so far, she asked my advice and I gave her that exact advice and it's gotten worse since." In addition to this, according to the Tampa Tribune, she:

• Had locks changed and posted a security guard at the door of her campaign headquarters in Tampa and had former staff members escorted in to retrieve their belongings. • Told a gathering of supporters in Cocoa Beach on Saturday that the Republican Party had "infiltrated" her campaign staff to put "knives in my back." • Told a reporter that a longtime, trusted political adviser had leaked a story about her staff members quitting, then called back to retract the comments. • Announced hiring her new staff without identifying them

Disaster is the only word I can think of to describe this. But after what she did in 2000, I can't say I feel bad for her.

On a side note of all of this, just recently Pat Robertson, of CBN's The 700 Club, declared that he was "a convert" on the issue of Global Warming. This has to be good news for the environmental crowd. A staunch conservative has proven to be a little more open minded than once believed.

Since I have not figured out how to use the HTML codes on this page, I will have to post the names of all my sources here. Thanks to Democratic Underground, Think Progress, Quinnipiac University, "The Hill" and the local news sources that I mentioned in this column.

More Fun With Video

Two new clips for you today...

This first one is a music video made by a soldier from the Iraq War. It hits you in the heart. Incredible.
Enjoy -- http://afsc.org/iraq/cray-video.htm

The Second Video Clip is of Sen. Rick Santorum stating this brilliant quote...

Santorum: "And yet we have brave men and women who are willing to step forward because they know what's at stake. They're willing to sacrifice their lives for this great country. What I'm asking all of you tonight is not to put on a uniform. Put on a bumper sticker. Is it that much to ask? Is it that much to ask to step up and serve your country?"

He's not talking about a Pro-War Bumper Sticker. He's talking about a "Santorum for Senate" Bumper Sticker. Unbelievable.

Take a look at this website and please don't vote for this numbskull...

That's it for now, but check out the Santorum website and the Waging Peace Website. Good stuff.
